MCU Theory: 'Spider-Man: Far From Home's' Chameleon is Getting a Skrull Backstory?

A major Spider-Man character may have been hiding in plain sight, but is Jon Watts hiding a huge origin change from the fanbase that could have massive ramification on the MCU?

Gotta give Spider-Man: Far From Home a lot of credit, they upped the Marvel mid and post-credit scenes game up, giving fans some major double takes. You'd be forgiven if you had to turn to your friend beside you to make sure that what you just saw actually happened.

It did.

Not only is Spider-Man's secret identity no longer a secret, but the Nick Fury and Maria Hill we follow for the entire movie are actually the Skrull's Talos and his wife that we met in Captain Marvel.

A pretty odd thing to just throw in there outside of comic relief. The only explanation that was given by Director Jon Watts was that he thought it would make the film fun to watch on viewers second go-around to catch all the different hints.

There's gotta be more to it than that.

I've already gotten into how the significance of the mid-credit scene and how it factors into the Sinister Six. But, what exactly do the Skrulls being involved in this film have to do with anything besides just letting us know they're still around?

Dmitri is also a Skrull

During the film, we're introduced to one of Nick Fury's associates named Dmitri, who we've never seen in previous movies. The character is played by talented Turkish actor Numan Acar, who is picking up steam after playing Hakim in Disney's Aladdin.

This character didn't do much, but his name alone was enough to spark speculation fires and link this Dmitri to another Dmitri from the comics; Dmitri Smerdyakov, the Chameleon.

The character was not officially credited with the Smerdyakov surname, but Jon Watts didn't discredit the rumor:

“Well, Dmitri in the film works for Nick Fury and I think anyone who works for Nick Fury, they certainly have a mysterious past. We’re not specifically saying that he’s [Chameleon]… but we’re not not saying.”

Somewhat of a contradiction considering the Nick Fury we're following is not actually Nick Fury.

Why would this never before seen character be working for the Phony Fury?

Is it possible that Dmitri is also a Skrull? It would make sense that Talos chose to surround himself with his own men while down on Earth.

This would be a different backstory to the character compared to the comics. Chameleon from the comics is also a shapeshifter but from human descent, and he is also the half-brother of Kraven the Hunter.

Making him a Skrull would keep the shapeshifting aspect of the character intact without coming up with another backstory for how he acquired this ability.

For a reason that can be given in a sequel, Dmitri could defect from Talos' crew in order to pursue his own more nefarious endeavors on Earth.

This serves a dual purpose.

It gives the MCU another addition to Spider-Man rogues gallery, but it also introduces us to to the concept of Skrulls as true antagonists.

A small piece towards a secret invasions storyline, one of the better and more suspenseful stories from the comics that seems out of reach with the current Skrulls. Captain Marvel went out of its way to subvert expectations with the Skrulls and made them more of a friendly race.

Making the Chameleon a Skrull would show off that just like humans, Skrulls can be good and bad depending on their desires.

If Marvel is building up to a Sinister Six plot in a sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home, then having the Chameleon included with a Skrull backstory would be much easier to fit into the current MCU lore, rather than spending time on another origin story.

This is all dependent on whether Dmitri isn't just a throwaway henchman and Jon Watts is trolling fans. Judging the fact that they seem to be setting up a major villain team up in the near future, Chameleon hiding in plain sight is highly likely.
