Netflix's 'Castlevania' Has a Poster: And It's Bloody Brilliant, but Is It Hiding Something?

The 'Castlevania' series is going to be a super-violent, super-bloody mini-series, as proven by the poster.

It's been an exciting time for Castlevania fans, as we've slowly been learning more about the highly anticipated anime-style adaptation of Castlevania III that's set to appear on Netflix in 2017. The series is being directed by Adi Shankar, who is most widely known for his gritty Power Rangers short film, Killing Them Softly and The Grey. Adi has committed to the series being, and I quote:

The best f*cking video game adaptation ever made to date ... I've seen it, and it's f*cking amazing."

Shankar isn't the only well known name attached to the series, when you consider that Frederator Studios is doing the animation, and the story was written by the famed comic book icon, Warren Ellis. Over the last few months, we've been told that the Castlevania series was going to be a super-violent mini-series that followed in the vein of Game of Thrones. And even though that's a lot to take in, I tend to believe Shanker's claims, especially after dropping the first official Castlevania poster on Facebook last night.

This poster is filled with everything that we'd expect to see in Castlevania: a blood red moon, bats and an iconic gothic style castle - yet it leaves a lot to the imagination, because we still know so little about the series other than it's a two-part series dropping in 2017 and 2018.

The official synopsis tells us a bit more though.

Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepes himself.

If the series truly follows the game which it's supposedly based on, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, then the 'last surviving member of the disgraced Belmot clan' would be Trevor Belmont. Likely then we would be seeing the pirate Grant DaNasty (whom Shankar claimed would have a name change to DiNasti), the witch Sypha Belnades, and the vampire Alucard.

Except, I feel that Shankar was trying to tell us more with this poster.

The Poster Is Hiding a Major Plot Line

So, we all know that Dracula and bats kind of go hand-in-hand, so that's pretty much a no-brainer when you're thinking about Castlevania, but when you look closely you'll notice the giant blood red moon.

First off is the moon itself, looming over the castle. Now it looks cool, I'll agree to that but if you ever played the original Castlevania III game and read the instruction manual you would have seen this as the introduction:

The time is 100 years before Simon Belmont's birth. The moon burns red overhead and black clouds loom large on the horizon. All is still and quiet. Onlt the call of a distant crow stirs the cold night air. Suddenly, thunder roars out of the Morbid Mountains and into the village or Warakiya...
But no one blinks an eye...
Count Dracula has assembled a mighty army of evil, and they're poised to march to bury mankind. Unfortunately, there's no corner on Earth that won't be gobbled up by this blood thirsty legion of Swamp Dragons, Slasher Skeletons and Forces of the Undead.

Now that sure as hell sounds like a great premise to build off of, and the blood moon is something significant when you look at it in those terms, and it will likely play a part in Dracula's rise to power.

The sun and moon have always played a role in the story of Dracula, considering that there is even lore about the power that a solar eclipse holds over the powers of evil - so far as to confine anger and evil intention.

It would be an interesting story line to include if Trevor and his companions are racing the celestial forces that could increase or decrease Dracula's power. But what do you think? Will the blood moon play a role in this Castlevania adaptation?
