Netflix Unleashes Daredevil Season 2 Trailer - Have We Already Met Matt Murdock's Next Villain?

The success of Marvel on Netflix, actually the entire visual universe, has been incredible so far. We were blown away by the brilliantly crafted story of Daredevil when it was released in April 2015, and it looks to continue that success in a couple months with its second season. Check the trailer out below.

Daredevil is set to return with Season 2 on March 18th, and from this promo our anticipation is rightfully renewed. With a full set of questions waiting to be answered from the season finale, we are anxious for the premiere to find our answers and to see the already announced new characters of Elektra (Elodie Yung) & Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher (Jon Bernthal).

In the first season, we watched as Daredevil was 'born' and faced off against his most well known villain, Wilson Fisk (portrayed incredibly by Vincent D'Onofrio). We watched as the blind-lawyer, Matt Murdock, secretly spent his nights running from rooftops bringing justice and fear to the criminals that had overtaken his city. All the while uncovering the truth of who Fisk was and the, ultimately, larger danger lurking in the shadows of The Hand. And while I'm sure we will see Wilson Fisk and The Hand again in Season 2, I believe that we will find another villain for Daredevil to square off against: Bullseye.

I know that he has been rumored (and hoped) to appear in the second season for a while. Although there has been no casting news about the character, I believe that he will make his "official" appearance in Season 2, and I say "official" because I'm pretty sure he's already been introduced and we didn't think much of it at the time.

Where and how is Bullseye in Hell's Kitchen?

If we think back to the first season, in episode 6 'Condemed', that is where I believe we first met Bullseye. In this episode we find Daredevil getting trapped in the fallout of Fisk's plans to take over Hell's Kitchen, as he attempts to keep Vladimir safe from Fisk (at least long enough to get answers). Fisk tries to frame Daredevil after having an ESU sniper open fire on the officers surrounding the warehouse that he's hiding in.

And there he is. The sniper is Bullseye.

After watching through the episode, the keen eye notices the sniper's bag has what looks like an Ace of Spades which is a huge nod toward the character. Could it just be a fun little easter egg left by Marvel? Yes, possibly, but I believe it's where we are first introduced to the potential of the character existing in Hell's Kitchen already and at the disposal of Fisk himself.

We already know that Marvel isn't above changing the background/personality of a character to better suit the story being told. I believe that this may be one of those instances, but before we get into how he could be different lets look into the comic version first.

Who is Bullseye?

Bullseye, also known as Lester, is an expert marksman, assassin and martial artist. Bullseye has near perfect hand-eye coordination which gives Bullseye lethal aim with anything from an assault rifle to a playing card. Bullseye is a bit of an unknown in the comics, his early life really isn't delved into, but what we do know about him is that he had a short stint as a special operative with the NSA, but ultimately he enjoyed killing too much, and left government service and became a freelance assassin.

Over his years as an assassin, he has crossed paths with several notable Marvel characters including Deadpool and The Punisher. Eventually Bullseye crossed paths with Daredevil when he ventured into New York City for a series of extortion attempts. The two fought and ultimately Daredevil was defeated by Bullseye, but his extortion attempts were stopped thanks to the hero. Shortly after, Bullseye was hired to murder Matt Murdock but was defeated by Daredevil. In this defeat he vowed vengeance against the hero, becoming his arch-nemesis fighting the blind hero at every chance. The pair clashed numerous times over the years, trading defeats. Bullseye fought an enraged Daredevil after killing Elektra, the woman Daredevil loved, with her own sai and a playing card. This fight nearly killed Bullseye after Daredevil allowed him to fall from the roof of a building.

Needless to say, the pair have a rich history to build from.

What could Bullseye's role look like in Season 2?

In the comics, as you read above Bullseye has a few stories with Daredevil and Matt Murdock. Bullseye killed Elektra with a single playing card and finished her off with her very own sai. The fact that we're being introduced to Elektra in Season 2 makes me believe that Bullseye will undoubtedly show up as it's too good of a storyline to miss out on. Yet, I think if Marvel truly does introduce Bullseye into Hell's Kitchen, they may take a more modest approach. Not that I didn't love Colin Farrell's performance in the 2003 film - but, no, wait I didn't love it - but I believe that Marvel could tone down the mercenary's characteristics and evolve the character into something a tad more 'realistic'.

I see a few variants of how Bullseye could be incorporated.

1. A corrupt cop who decides to use his skill for the highest bidder. This style character could play well opposite the Matt Murdock we find in the Netflix series as Matt would have difficulty knowing that he has to face off against a killer who pretends to be a good, loyal and honest cop. This type could also play well against the Punisher when he enters Hell's Kitchen.

2. An ex-military / turned mercenary who killed the actual ESU sniper. In the episode I mentioned above the sniper took the shot at the order of Fisk, so I could easily see Bullseye killing the cop and taking his position for this specific job. This character could also play well, seeing as he was introduced as taking orders from Wilson Fisk. Although Fisk is in prison, I could see him or Vanessa (his potential wife) giving an order to Bullseye to take out Daredevil, and in the process taking a contract out on Murdock.

3. A cold-blooded, psychotic killer. Less a mercenary, and more just a person who enjoys killing way too much. I see this version being possible but unlikely because I think it could bear too many similarities to the Colin Farrell version from the defunct movie in 2003.

Ultimately, however and if Bullseye shows up in the second season, we're set for another incredible trip into Hell's Kitchen as Daredevil and Matt Murdock are sure to face some of their most challenging days sooner rather than later.
