(WARNING: Spoilers for Logan follow, you've been warned.)

As we get closer to the premiere of Logan, more footage seems to be released. From tv spots to new trailers, quite a bit of footage has already been released. Within the footage released, we've already bore witness to Wolverine and X-23 teaming up to take on Donald Pierce and the Reavers. We've also been informed the X-Men are no longer around, forcing Wolverine has to rely on his buddy Caliban and X-23 to help him take care of a dying Professor Xavier.

The trailers released for Logan have depicted Xavier in dire conditions and one scene has more than implied his death will take place in a forested area. The latest trailer featured an intense fight sequence that also takes place in the same area as Xavier's presumed burial scene. However, we don't know exactly how Xavier will die but we do know that it's practically a guarantee at this point.

Does Caliban Die In Logan?

Apart from Professor Xavier dying in Logan, it appears as if Caliban won't make it out alive either. One of the recently released tv spots for Logan shows a glimpse of Caliban with a decaying face, holding two grenades as he releases the pins.

Now, some could argue this scene doesn't confirm his death but from the look of the decay on Caliban's face, it appears as if something else is affecting him and an easy way to stop the progression is to end it on his own terms which it appears Caliban is doing by releasing the pins on those grenades.

The other clue that signifies Caliban's death is that he's standing in the back of a storage unit with two grenades in his hands. It's unclear who Caliban is looking at but it's most likely the Reavers coming to acquire more mutant specimens. Even so, it appears as if this is Caliban's final scene in Logan.

What's of more importance here isn't that Caliban has died, it's what happened to him before he died that we should take note of.

Is A Disease That Targets Mutants Responsible For Their Extinction?

Looking closer at the image of Caliban, his skin is covered in sores and he appears to be withering away. This may be Caliban's appearance due to his mutant gene but on the other hand, the sores on Caliban's skin may have been caused by the disease that killed all the mutants. The notion hasn't been confirmed by the director of Logan, James Mangold but it's believed that the mutant race has become extinguished due to a disease that only kills mutants.

There's no validity to those claims yet but when we account for the seething sores on Caliban's face and the mysterious absence of the X-Men (and mutants in general), it wouldn't be too far-fetched for a mutant disease to be the cause for mutantkind becoming extinct. There's also the matter of Wolverine losing his healing factor which could be a side effect of the mutant disease that killed the X-Men. Wolverine likely only survived so long because his healing factor kept his body from succumbing to the same mutant disease that probably killed his fellow X-Men.

If a mutant disease was responsible for the extinction of mutants, that would also explain how all the X-Men have been wiped out when they've come face to face with celestial beings like Apocalypse and still walked away from the fight. That being said, the cause of the X-Men's death could turn out to be almost anything. For all we know, the dialogue in the first trailer for Logan could have been straightforward when the dialogue seemed to imply that Wolverine killed the X-Men with his own two claws. Whatever the case, the cause of the X-Men's death will likely be kept secreted until the premiere of Logan.

For now, it's safe to assume the X-Men probably perished due to a mutant disease, seeing as how the mutant disease is visibly attacking Caliban's body in the aforementioned image and the X-Men have been all but confirmed to be extinct in the futuristic wasteland of Logan.
