Power Rangers that Landed with a Boom! Studios Entrance

Boom! Studios has been working hard to make a truly gritty and realistic Power Rangers comic book series. Along the way, many new Rangers and their Zords have been created and here we will take a look at those Rangers and their place in the 'Rangerverse'.

Go Go Power Rangers!

Power Rangers has had a long history on the small screen with many canon events being created during the Zordon Era and beyond. But now some of these events have now been undone with the creation of Boom! Studios Power Rangers comic books. Starting a week after Tommy Oliver (the original Green Ranger) broke the spell placed on him by Rita, you instantly get a more realistic reaction from the Rangers, especially from Zack Taylor (the original Black Ranger). Rather than instantly being trusted by his team, the Boom! Studios Rangers have questions if they can truly trust a guy who was set to kill them just a week earlier.

From here, the creators made it clear that this series would take a much more mature look at the world the Rangers reside within and have along the way had plenty of fun. New Rangers have been introduced, past Rangers have donned new colours, and new evils have risen within the Ranger ranks. Here we will look at some of these new additions to the history of Power Rangers.

Go Green Rangers GO GO!

A Team of Green Rangers

During one period in the comics the Red, Blue, Black, Yellow, and Pink Rangers all have their link to their power cut off. With few option left to the team, they all channel the Green Ranger powers to turn them into a team of Green Rangers. While it was only for a short time in the comics, it was interesting to see what the entire team would look like if their suits had been used for the Green Ranger over their original colours.

A Different Shade of Pink

Kimberly creates a new team of Ranger.

After Kimberly left the team in the third season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers she began focusing more on her gymnastics training. While the Rangers were off world, Kimberly found herself at the centre of an attempt to mutate the world's populace into monsters. Using the Sword of Light, Kimberly was able to access the morphin grid and create a new team of Power Rangers. Bringing veteran Rangers Trini and Zack back, they also recruit the brother and sister duo Serge and Britt as new Blue and Red Rangers.

The Unthinkable Happened!

Bulk & Skull become Power Rangers!

In a special story Boom! Studios made the long-running characters Bulk & Skull Rangers, now the Purple and Orange Rangers and in command of the mighty Baconadon and Featherdactyl Zords. Fans have been creating their own Mighty Morphin Purple and Orange Rangers for years, but Boom! Studios took them a place no one saw coming by making Bulk and Skull Rangers.

Colour Swapping Rangers

The Rangers shake things up!

Adding some fun to the mix, Boom Studios had the original team swap their colours and powers. Jason and Trini swapped colours, making Jason the Yellow Ranger and Trini the Red Ranger while Kimberly, Zack, and Billy rotated their colours with Kimberly becoming the Blue Ranger, Zack the Pink Ranger, and Billy the Black Ranger. With the colour swap, Trini has also become the new team leader.

Go supersonic with a new Power Rangers team!

Power Rangers Supersonic

These suits confused Ranger fans when Legendary Keys of them were used in the Power Rangers Super Megaforce television series. Thanks to Boom! Studios, this mystery has been answered. A team of six Rangers from an alien planet, Ace (Red), Brute (Blue), Gent (Black), Star (Pink), Pyre (Yellow) and Trek (Green) were introduced in the story "Psychotic." Their time in print was short lived as the Green Ranger betrays the team and kills his fellow Rangers off. Despite their short time, it is nice to see Boom! Studios cleaning up loose-ends from the television show.

Zordon's Original 1969 Team!

Zordon's Original Team of Chosen Heroes

Boom! Studios created a brand new team of past Mighty Morphin Power Rangers which shook the very history of Power Rangers itself. Led by a female Red Ranger, Grace Sterling, the first female Black Ranger, Jamie Gilmore, and the first male Pink Ranger, Daniel O'Halloran, it brought fans a gender line-up unlike any seen before. Their time as a team was short lived, as they only operated as Rangers for a single mission which saw three of the team killed. What is nice of this short-lived team is that it did show the readers that Boom! Studios would do what the television show was too scared to even attempt in reassigning genders and Ranger colours.

Psycho Green makes his debut in a savage battle in 1969.

Psycho Green was More Savage than the Other Psycho Rangers

Introduced in Power Rangers in Space, the Psycho Rangers consisted of a Red, Blue, Yellow, Black and Pink Ranger. Fans speculated for nearly two decades if there were other colours out there. Boom! Studios answered that question with Psycho Green. After Trek killed the other Supersonic Rangers, he went to Dark Spector and was turned into the Green Psycho Ranger. This has raised the question if the other Psycho Rangers are past Rangers who had betrayed their teams. Perhaps in time Boom! Studios will answer that question with more Psycho Ranger origin stories.

Enter the Dino Charge Dark Ranger.

Heckyl Finally Becomes the Dino Charge Dark Ranger

When Power Rangers Dino Super charge introduced the character Heckyl, fans instantly speculated that he may become the Navy Dino Charge Ranger, which embodied the power of the Spinosaurus. Now in Boom! Studio's comic book, Heckyl has finally fulfilled his Ranger destiny in becoming one of the good guys. How and when he got the powers has yet to be revealed, but he is a member on the current team in the comics which consists of random Rangers from various teams. So, these questions could indeed be answered in coming issues.

A New Female Green and then Blue SPD Ranger

Lina Song Changes two Ranger Genders on a Single Team

In the future after the end of the series Power Rangers SPD the team was missing a Green Ranger. The Red Ranger from the show left the team resulting in the Blue Ranger being promoted to Red Ranger and the Green Ranger being promoted to Blue Ranger. With the empty spot needing to be filled, Lina Song became the teams new Green Ranger. Later, she joins Tommy Oliver and several Space Patrol Delta officers in rescuing Tommy's son JJ from Scorpina. After their success, she appears as the latest Blue SPD Ranger, which gives SPD one of the most gender fluid Ranger teams to date.

It's in his blood. JJ Olivers follows his father's legacy.

JJ Olivers is a Ranger Changing Hero Like His Father

The son of Tommy Oliver and Katherine Hillard, JJ joined the SPD Academy to follow his parents example of fighting the forces of evil. While originally irritated by being in his father's shadow, JJ got to don his father's original Green Ranger powers by using the last morph within Tommy's Master Morpher. Replacing Lina, JJ became the new Green SPD Ranger, but also retains the original Dragon Shield which has given him a brilliant new look to the classic SPD Ranger style.

The New Commander of SPD Earth, Dekaranger

Sky Tate's Latest Ranger Powers

Sky Tate was the original Blue SPD Ranger and at the shows conclusion he was promoted to Red Ranger when Jack left the team. Over time he was promoted to the SPD Commander on Earth replacing Doggy Kruger. Well, much like Doggy Kruger who had his own Ranger powers as the SPD Shadow Ranger, Sky has received his own similar powers. With a similar style to the Shadow Ranger, but in red, the Dekaranger brands an "X" to signify '10' which was the number present on the Shadow Ranger.

The King of Evil, Lord Drakkon

Lord Drakkon the Ruler of Earth

In an alternate reality, Tommy Oliver breaks his spell from Rita. But rather than joining his fellow Rangers, he returns to continue his service to Rita. Rewriting history Tommy continues to fight for the forces of evil and pushes the Rangers to a final fight. With no options remaining, the Power Rangers call for help across the universe and Zordon creates a new power for Jason. However, the final attack sees Tommy kill Jason and take the powers for himself, becoming Lord Drakkon. He then kills the original Blue Ranger and manages to steal the power coins of the Black and Yellow Rangers, depowering them.

Now bent on taking over other realities and with an army of Ranger Sentries at his command, he invades the Ranger's universe. Failing in his first attempts and being captured, he eventually escapes and returns to his reality to plan for war against all past and future Rangers. With many battle he begins to shatter the morphin grid by going through time and killing multiple Tommy Olivers and absorbing the powers of Ranger teams. This causes his suit to alter with each power he absorbs and become the most dangerous force any Ranger team has ever faced.

Lord Drakkon Evolutions

Left-Right: Evolution I, Evolution II, Evolution III

The first evolution was the result of Lord Drakkon absorbing the powers of the Samurai Rangers, which also gave him a new Blue Samurai Sentry to add to his army. Once he had killed his counterpart Tommy Oliver, the Red Zeo Ranger, and absorbed the powers of the Zeo Rangers, he received his second evolution and a Green Zeo Sentry to add to his ranks. His final form was received when he used the Ninja Steel shard and mashed it together with all the remaining power sets and entered the heart of the morphin grid. In this form he appeared to rejuvenate to a younger form, but when he lost against the allied Rangers from multiple teams he reverted back to the original Lord Drakkon age and Ranger suit.

Drakkon's Warmachine Megazord, the Black Dragon

The Mighty Black Dragon Megazord

With Rangers powers come great Ranger responsibilities, or in this case chaos in the form of the Black Dragon Megazord. While many Ranger's Zords have been used to protect over destroy, Lord Drakkon's Zord the Black Dragon brought the Rangers to their knees. Armed with a powerful tail that it uses in combat similar to the original Dragonzord, and energy canons in both its hands made it a formidable force. It even holds a unique ability to shrink in size allowing it to battle Rangers themselves and not just their mighty Zords. At this size, its lasers could disrupt a Rangers powers, demorphing them.

Drakkons Ranger Sentry Army

Drakkon's Army Prepare for Battle

As Lord Drakkon absorbed the powers of various Power Rangers, he would often gain the ability to turn his army into Ranger Sentries. These Sentries would follow his every order and each had their own unique specialty. With an endless Army of evil Rangers to command, they acted more powerfully than any foot-soldiers used by past evils in Power Rangers history.

The Power Ranger's Answer to Emperor's Royal Guard Stormtroopers

Tyrannosaurus Sentries

Acting as the personal Elite Guard of Lord Drakkon and the high ranking members of Rita's allies, such as Scorpina, the Tyrannosaurus Sentries enforce order. One Sentry was revealed to be Skull from that universe, who was undercover for the resistance. When Lord Drakkon discovered his true mission, he had Skull executed. While they hold a dual bladed staff, the Tyrannosaurus Sentries in the Lord Drakkon's throne room wield staffs similar to Lord Zedd.

Lord Drakkon prefers black for his Troopers.

Mastodon Sentries

The Mastodon Sentries were the first Sentries introduced to readers, acting as the foot soldiers to enforce Lord Drakkon's order in the dystopic future. They police the cities and are the ground/paratrooper infantry in military operations. They even pilot aerial assault vehicles when the need arises.

The Close Combat Soldiers in Drakkon's Army

Sabertooth Sentries

A special class of foot soldier in Lord Darkkon's arsenal, but their true function has never been revealed, are the Sabertooth Sentries. Given their heavy armour and the style of their pistols, it is highly likely they are close combat soldiers. This is even further suggested when many Sabertooth Sentries defended Lord Drakkon in the mass Ranger assault on the Moon.

The Sniper's Eye of a Pterodactyl

Pterodactyl Sentries

Acting as long range infantry and sniper support for the Mastodon Sentries, the Pterodactyl Sentries were deadly. They took out targets with ease using their long range assault rifles. These Sentries were later decommissioned when the Ranger Slayer took the Pterodactyl powers for her own mission under Lord Drakkon's orders.

Green Rolls with the Big Guns

Green Zeo Sentries

Acting as the heavy artillery for Lord Drakkon, the Green Zeo Sentries operate an exosuit mini "Zord-like" tank. Equipped with blaster cannons, rapid fire high-caliber chain guns and robotic claws for grabbing, lifting and crushing makes the Green Zeo Sentries Lord Drakkon's literal 'big guns' on the battlefield.

Watch out for streaks of silver in the sky. The Silver Sentries attack from above.

Silver Sentries

The Silver Sentries act as air support in Lord Drakkon's army—they fly with great speed and bombard enemies with barrages of blaster fire. They are the most agile and fast of the Sentries making them difficult for even Megazords to deal with.

As Strong and Tough as a Rhino Sentry

Rhino Sentries

With a much bulkier and heavy armoured style than other Ranger Sentries, the Rhino Sentries act as pure muscle in Lord Drakkon's forces. They have great strength and defence due to the armour and wield two giant blades for extreme close combat and can even skewer enemies.

Blue Samurai Sentries slice through good.

Blue Samurai Sentry

Equipped with dual blade, the Blue Samurai Sentries work closely with the Mastodon Sentries. Acting as a mass close combat regiment compared to the Mastodon Sentries who use suppressing fire, they make a powerful army for any force to face when together. Adding to their deadly look is a pair of red piercing eyes that come through the normally black visor.

The Mighty Defence of Lord Drakkon, Gold Dino Charge Sentries

Gold Dino Charge Sentries

The Dino Charge Gold Sentries act as the defensive wall and are literally a line in the sand for Lord Drakkon's army. They also use energy rifles that blast heavy electric-based energy at their targets, making them the last line of defence in Lord Drakkon's massive army.

Hyperforce Rangers Power-Up!

The Team of Six Hyperforce Rangers

While introduced outside of the comics, the Hyperforce Rangers were not debuted in traditional Ranger Style via a television show. Instead they were introduced through a live-streamed tabletop roleplaying web game, Power Rangers Hyperforce. Through the livestream they have interacted with Rangers from the past, but now they have found their way into the the "Shattered Grid." This exposed them to a wider audience and further solidified the canon of the team thanks to Boom! Studio's comic books.

Ranger Zords unite for the Mega Megazord.

A Mega-Mash Megazord is created.

During the war against Lord Drakkon and his Ranger Sentries, many of the Ranger's Zords were damaged in the battle. With few options remaining Jen Scott, the Pink Timeforce Ranger, calculated which remaining Zords could be combined to create a new Megazord. With the Hyperforce Megazord acting as its base it was joined with the Super Zeo Zord I (Power Rangers Zeo), the Hawkzord and Lionzord (Power Rangers Ninja Storm), the Mystic Phoenix, Mystic Garuda and Mystic Minotaur (Power Rangers Mystic Force), the Wolf Animal Spirit (Power Rangers Jungle Fury), the Plesio Zord (Power Rangers Dino Charge) and the Black Dragon creating the Mega Megazord. With the Black Dragon components the Mega Megazord could alter its size.

Lord Drakkon was never alone. Enter the Ranger Slayer.

The Ranger Slayer and Finster-5

As mentioned earlier, the Pterodactyl Sentries were decommissioned for the Ranger Slayer. Equipped with the Bow of Darkness, the counterpart to the Sword of Darkness, the Ranger Slayer was a loyal warrior within Lord Drakkon's ranks. Revealed to be Kimberly from Lord Drakkon's universe, she was placed under a similar spell that Rita used on Tommy. Eventually freed from his control, she now leads a team of random Rangers in the "Shattered Gird" storyline.

The Ranger Slayer pilots the Mighty Gravezord.

Design of the Gravezord

Much like Lord Drakkon, the Ranger Slayer has her own Zord at her command. Unlike the traditional Zords, the Gravezord is a mash of Zord components to create a new Zord. With the head of Tor the Shuttlezord, horns of the Red Dragon Thunderzord, chest of the Tigerzord, arms made from the Dragon Thunderzord, Lion Thunderzord, Unicorn Thunderzord and Griffin Thunderzord and wings made from the Firebird Thunderzord give rise to the mighty Gravezord.

Mega-Gravezord Power Up!

Gravezord Combines with the Dinozords

The Gravezord can also combine with the original Megazord to create the Mega-Gravezord. This marks the first time the original Zords and the Rangers second Zords, the Thunderzords, have combined to create an ultimate combination. With the ability to fly, slice through its targets with giant claws and whip enemies with its tail makes for a dynamic Megazord.

Shine Bright Solar Ranger

The Solar Ranger flies into battle.

Boom! Studios clearly decided their was not enough Purple in the Rangerverse and created the new Solar Ranger. Ellarien or "Ari" for short, was first believed by the Rangers as a minion of Lord Drakkon. But she is in fact an orphan who is having to feed energy into the Solarix which "pines for" the energy. When she first meets other Rangers she is scared and confused as to why they have "Vortex Energy" like her. Her true purpose is still being unravelled in the comics, but is sure to bring more surprises along the way.
