Review: 'Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping' Is a Hilarious Victory for the Lonely Island Boys

This movie contains that Lonely Island type of comedy while also telling a classic Hollywood story.

When you probably first saw the trailer for Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping you probably thought "just a two hour long stupid Lonely Island sketch." I can assure you that Popstar is much more than that.

This movie contains that Lonely Island type of comedy that made Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer famous, and dials it up a notch. It keeps the amazing comedy while also telling a classic Hollywood story.

The film follows Conner4Real (Andy Samberg) who started out in a Beastie Boys type of group called the Style Boyz with his friends Owen (Jorma Taccone) and Lawrence (Akiva Schaffer). The band ended due to a disagreement over who wrote a famous verse that made Conner stand out from the group and launched his solo career. It's a tale of how Conner had to learn what's really important in life, his solo career or making music with his friends.

Like I said before, it is a classic Hollywood tale that has been told time and time again. Young man gets famous and leaves his friends and family behind and thinks more of himself than he actually is. I have to commend the film for telling this story in a way that didn't feel like anything the film industry has seen before.

The film was shot like a documentary with interviews and fourth wall breaking that was full of nothing but laughs. Every scene in the movie is funny enough to leave a smile on your face, and the truly hilarious scenes will have you laughing hard and be thinking about it over and over again for days.

Not only will the scenes be stuck in your head, but the music is like The Lonely Island on steroids. Samberg's lyrics take you back to when "My Dick in a Box" first came out.

Here is the music video for one the songs featured in film, Warning the video is R-rated:

It wasn't just the comedy that kept the movie entertaining, it was the relationship with Conner and his friends; it had heart buried beneath the satire. How Conner4Real loses himself is something that we've seen so many times in the entertainment industry, and the film tells a story of how Conner had to painfully find his way back to reality and not taking his loved ones for granted.

Overall this was a hilarious film with a story to back it up that will have you laughing and smiling the whole time. It is easily the funniest movie of the year and If you are in dire need of a good laugh, than this is the movie you need to buy a ticket for.
