'Rick And Morty' Plot Twist: Will Season 3 Split Up The Family?

"Wubba lubba dub-dub," where the Squanch is Rick & Morty Season 3? Well, it looks like we will have to wait just a little bit longer to see how the show picks up after the dramatic second season. Things looked pretty dire for the Smith family when we left them: returned to an alien-filled Earth, their savior Grandpa Rick was destined to spend his days rotting in a maximum-security Galactic Federation prison. With mother and father figures Beth and Jerry reportedly filing for divorce, it seems that things are going to get worse before they can get better for the Smiths. What consequences will the divorce have on rest of the family in the third season of Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland's crazy cartoon comedy?

Splitsville for the Smiths.

So, it looks like the creators are breaking the cardinal rule of cartoons, and actually moving a plot forward! I mean, let's be honest, Marge and Homer Simpsons have been on the verge of divorce for 27 years!

On the commentary of the Season 2 DVD, co-creator Dan Harmon revealed:

"I thought that Jerry and Beth getting a divorce would be like Kenny being killed in South Park, like, when we first conceived the show... that it would never run out of shelf life that that was the kind of joke about like, oh all our parents were about to get a divorce."

Beth (Sarah Chalke) and Jerry's (Chris Parnell) relationship has been significantly weakened recently, while Harmon and Roiland have said that this season we will get to see Beth develop. A darker tone is promised for the season, as well as a more dramatic turn away from the "monster of the week" formula. A larger arc will be helped by a longer episode run; instead of the usual 10/11 episodes, the season has been bumped to 14.

Whether the Smith divorce will remain permanent is unknown, but we do know a couple of other interesting stories coming out of Season 3.

Rick vs. Giant Rats: At San Diego Comic-Con Dan Harmon revealed a sneak peek at an upcoming Rick and Morty episode. While still in the early stages, it showed a bug-like Rick taking on an army of mutated rats with the help of a Frankenstein-rat-suit.

Mrs. Sanchez: Another big potential plot is the return/arrival of Mrs. Sanchez. We know that at one point Rick had a wife, although the pilot episode seemed to reveal she had died. While Jeff and Beth are heading for a divorce, could Rick and his wife be rekindling their romance?

Who's for Hawaii?: We frequently go to other dimensions, but how about some sunshine back on Earth? Harmon and Roiland joked with Den of Geek:

"I am blown away by the seemingly instant success of Rick and Morty. I look forward to continuing their adventures...It’s time to demand that the network allows us to draw the characters going to Hawaii."

Interdimensional Cable 3: It just wouldn't be Rick and Morty without the famous ad-libbed episode as we channel surf through the depths of outer space.

Where is it?

Like waiting for Christmas — or the next season of Game of Thrones — it seems like an eternity since we left the Sanchez-Smiths. The end of Season 2 teased that we would have to wait until March 2017 before Rick's antics would be back on our screens. Speaking at Magic City Comic Con, Harmon confirmed that we will get Season 3 before the year is out. Slated for a December release date, get yourselves ready for whatever madness the next 14 episodes hold. How you can beat internal organ theme parks or teenagers impregnating robots is beyond me, but I am excited to find out!
