Even as Marvel fans celebrate the box office performance of Doctor Strange, our eyes are already turning to 2017, and the next chapters of the MCU! Possibly the most exciting film next year is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the sequel to 2014's surprising blockbuster hit. Fans are eagerly awaiting the chance to catch up with with much-loved characters like Star-Lord, Rocket, and (Baby) Groot, and we're all on tenterhooks for more information. Speaking at Heroes & Villains Fan Fest, Sean Gunn — who plays the character of Kraglin, one of Yondu's Ravagers — gave us some hints about what to expect...

Don't expect the normal Marvel rules.

In the run-up to Captain America: Civil War, Kevin Feige set a rule: unless otherwise stated, every #Marvel movie happens in the year in which it was released. That means time passes in between Marvel movies as it does in the real world, although sometimes the 'unless otherwise indicated' point causes a good bit of controversy —fans are still fiercely debating the finer details of Doctor Strange's continuity!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 also fits under the 'unless otherwise indicated'. Only a couple of months have passed since the first film, meaning the character relationships won't have changed too dramatically. It's a smart move, because — unlike most of Marvel's movies — the timing of Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't change the wider continuity of the #MCU at all. It's set in distant space, and the #Avengers don't even know the Guardians exist in the first place!

What's going on between the Guardians and the Ravagers?

As we all know, Guardians of the Galaxy ended with Chris Pratt's Star-Lord double-crossing the Ravagers and giving the Infinity Stone to the Xandarians. To the surprise of his Ravagers, Michael Rooker's Yondu has chosen to cut Star-Lord some slack. Needless to say, given he commands a crew of pirates, this hasn't exactly been a popular decision. Sean Gunn added:

"There's a little rumbling amongst the Ravagers, like, 'Where does Yondu's allegiance lay here? Is he going soft on Quill? So, the Ravagers have to make a decision of what they're gonna do about Yondu and I think Kraglin is a key part of that."

That sounds like mutiny to me — and, given Yondu is expected to become a member of the Guardians in Vol. 2, it may suggest that he winds up on the run from his own crew. With other major plots confirmed for Guardians Vol. 2 (such as Star-Lord learning his father is none other than Ego the Living Planet!), how this plot will fit into the wider narrative is, frankly, anybody's guess.

Regardless of what plot mysteries lie in store, we can be sure of one thing: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will expand on the themes & ideas broached in the first movie. Reflecting on this, Sean Gunn described it as a continuation of the themes we saw in the first Guardians.

"I've heard my brother [director James Gunn] say that the first movie was about creating a family the second movie is more about being a family and the struggle of maintaining that. I think that's spot on and I hope that's what resonates with people."

The first Guardians was pretty unique, in that it married the concept of the wider MCU with tremendous humor and pathos. Only Marvel can make you fall in love with a talking raccoon, but that drunken speech simply broke fans' hearts.

According to Sean Gunn, we can expect more of the same.

"It's a tentpole movie, meaning it's literally for everyone. It's not just a kids' movie disguised as an adult movie or vice versa. I really think it's for all ages. I really do think it has a heart but it's a comedy, as well. "

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is easily one of the most hotly anticipated movies of 2017, following on from Marvel's most unlikely blockbuster hit. Fans worldwide are hanging on every word, desperate to know where this story is heading next. Here at Moviepilot, we'll make sure to keep you in the loop!
