Slay Another Day: 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' Cast Talk Show Revival At Birthday Reunion

Unless you have been hiding in a crypt, you may have noticed that rather small cast reunion for #BuffytheVampireSlayer's 20th anniversary. Buffy, Angel, Willow, Spike, Xander (in fact, everyone apart from Giles) was back in the most nostalgia-filled reunion since Leia hugged Chewie. Presumably bathing in the toasty waters of the Hellmouth has some age-defying qualities, because damn, the cast of #JossWhedon's hilarious #horror still look the same age. It is amazing to think that some two decades have passed since #Buffy first stepped through the doors of Sunnydale High.

As with all these things, questioning inevitably turned to the possibilities of bringing the series back from the dead. Buffy's final episode "Chosen" aired on May 20 2003 — the day my childhood died — and although the show continues to live on in the Whedon-sanctioned #comicbook series, Buffy buffs have been praying to the demons that the show could return for a live-action Season 8.

In between posing for saucy snaps for Entertainment Weekly, the cast shared their views on when/if Buffy could return, and sorry to break it to you, but the chances of a revival are looking slimmer than Cordelia Chase in her cheerleader's outfit. Here's what they had to say:

Alyson Hannigan (Willow): “I think we should do the Buffy cartoon.”James Marsters (Spike): “I think if Joss is helming it, then hell yeah. If not, then hell no.”Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia): “I think the fans would just go crazy if something like that would happen. It would just make so many people happy.”

Joking aside, it was Buffy herself who drove a stake into the heart of the Slayer's return as #SarahMichelleGellar confirmed our deepest fears:

“At a certain point, when things are magical, you don’t want to go back and Godfather III it—right? I’m sure the fans are incredibly disappointed to hear that answer, but I think they’d be more disappointed if we created something and it didn’t live up to the expectation because the expectation is so incredibly high. And I love that it can live in comic form and graphic novels. There are so many worlds it can live in.”

The running joke here is clearly the short-lived Buffy the Animated Series, which saw most of the cast return to their roles but never made it past the pilot stages in 2002. You can find it lurking in some unopened corners of YouTube if you really want. Certainly, if Gilmore Girls, Heroes, Prison Break, and Will & Grace can all return, then why can't the Scooby Gang? Sadly, just like the cast of Friends will never again sip a cup of joe in Central Perk, it looks like Sunnydale will continue to remain as a giant crater in the ground.

The interview is much of what we have heard before, with Gellar, Eliza Dushku, and David Boreanaz all being outspoken on the fact Buffy will probably just remain at seven (live-action) seasons. While the show will continue to live on in other forms, including an upcoming novel continuation, six years was a pretty good run for the angsty teen horror-comedy.

You get the feeling that if a revival was going to be announced, then the 20th anniversary would've been a pretty good time to do it. Who knows though, Buffy Season 8 in 27?
