The Gifted: Sentinels Are Coming for the Mutants—and They Don't Look Anything Like in Days of Future Past

The Gifted is coming to Fox next week, and it looks like one of the most compelling X-Men-based properties we've seen to date, standing out in many ways. One of its most intriguing aspects is bringing the mutant-hunting Sentinels to television — but it's a class of Sentinels that's never been shown before.

The Gifted series won't feature the typical Omega class Sentinels like Days of Future Past, but they instead will look somewhat like The Matrix's Sentinels: squid-like robotic organisms.

The Gifted's Sentinels appear to roll around on six whipping tails, attaching themselves to the bodies of runaway mutants — though we shouldn't be surprised to see them fly up into the air at some point, since there are flying mutants after all.

Our first glimpse at The Gifted's version of Sentinels came during its San Diego Comic-Con trailer, but they weren't identified as Sentinels at the time. However, now it looks like they're being controlled by handlers in the Sentinel Services mutant hunting division. Just look at the body armor Jace Turner (Coby Bell) is wearing:

Most comic iterations of the Sentinels depict them as artificially intelligent, not just remote-controllled, so they may evolve into the Days of Future Past version. Even more unique takes on the mutant-hunting robots could appear in the series as well — perhaps including ones as advanced as Nimrod or even the Prime Sentinels.

Either way, Thunderbird, Polaris and their ragtag group of mutants will have more obstacles than they can handle. Each member of their team possess useful abilities, but none of them are trained to fight like the X-Men. Let's just hope they run into some highly trained fugitives during their travels — because they're going to need all the help they can get if they want to survive the Sentinel onslaught coming for them.
