It's my favorite time of the year. It’s Halloween after all! Leaves are changing colors, the air is getting cooler, spooky decorations are everywhere, haunted houses spring up everywhere, ghost tours are readily acessable, and horror movies are playing on TV and in theaters. Here are my picks for some of the best ones to watch.

Teeth

I wasn't properly warned for this one and I cannot get my time back. I don't normally mind a bit of gore. This passed gore and went straight to vomit-town. I cannot even properly describe the plot, so here goes.

A young girl is born with a rare condition which enables her to kill attackers in a spectacular fashion. This movie will offend any delicate sensibilities that you may have and can make even the strongest stomach feel queasy. If you do find that you want to see it anyway, well, you have been warned. It is available to watch on Netflix, but I would advise against.

So, these are my personal picks for the top 3 horror movies to watch on Halloween, and one to avoid at all costs. As I plan to visit the theater soon to see a new horror movie, I will have new repertoire with which to create a new list next year! In the meantime, keep watching and decorating, because It’s officially Spook-tober! Happy Halloween!

The Houses October Built

The Houses October Built is such an amazing movie. It's a psychological thriller, so no overt paranormal aspects. It's also a found-footage style movie. Now, I'm not normally one to like found-footage movies, but I make an exception for this one.

It follows a group of friends who decide to rent an RV and travel the US in search of the best haunted houses to visit. Their search includes finding the most secretive haunt, one that is by invite only. Throughout the movie, the friends encounter things and events that gradually become creepier and scarier. This movie is definitely not one to watch alone unless you think you're brave enough to handle it. The movie can be found on Netflix for easy streaming, or for rental on Amazon.

The Babadook

The Babadook made waves earlier in the year when Netflix accidentally classified the movie under the LGBT category. The character of the Babadook then jokingly became a gay icon. The movie itself is not so light-hearted, however.

This movie centers around a single mother and her son, the father having been killed the day the son was born. The family dynamic is rough and the boy has few friends due to his eccentricities. The mother finds a book in her son's room one night that tells of the Babadook, a supernatural force that is out for blood. This movie is powerful and terrifying at the same time, and it is a must-watch. The movie is available on Netflix and for rent on Netflix.

It (1990)

Based on a Stephen King thriller, the 1990 version of It is quite the movie to see. A terrifying being haunts a small town, killing children and playing on the fears of others. The movie follows a group of friends both in their childhood and in their mid-30s as they try to piece together how the thing works and how to fight it. This movie features Tim Curry and is a hard one to watch alone. It is not available on Netflix but is easy to rent on Amazon.

They sound great, right? Of course they are. Now, I did promise you one horror movie to absolutely avoid, and with good reason. Now, I present to you:
