Larry David's impression of Sen. Bernie Sanders during the 2016 election was the most acclaimed Saturday Night Live bit in years — aside from their similar appearances and New York accents, David's mannerisms were spot-on. For proof, just take a look at this sketch, titled "Bern Your Enthusiasm":
Turns out, there may be a surprising reason for why #LarryDavid's parody was so eerily perfect.
A new episode of PBS's Finding Your Roots featured David — the co-creator of Seinfeld and creator/star of #CurbYourEnthusiasm, which returned to HBO last week — talking about his family tree ... and one branch actually led to #BernieSanders. Word of their genealogical ties leaked back in July, but it wasn't until last night's airing that audiences everywhere saw them react to the news that they're (in David's words) "like a third cousin, or something."
As you can see, they're both quite happy with the news, as well as surprised by it. Sanders's reaction is perhaps the more interesting one, since he says David "does a better Bernie Sanders than I do."
Apart from how entertaining this revelation is, it'll be interesting to see if David or Sanders are related to anyone else who'll appear on PBS's Finding Your Roots. Everyone who comes on the show is cross-referenced with past participants, meaning that Sanders and David could have other famous relatives we've yet to learn about.
Finding Your Roots airs Tuesdays on PBS. Curb Your Enthusiasm airs Sundays on HBO.
