A reboot to the '95 Mortal Kombat film is in active development, with James Wan producing and Simon McQuoid tapped to direct. While there's no official confirmation of McQuoid joining the project just yet, we do know that Greg Russo has already penned a first draft of the script. However, with the #reboot still in early development, the Mortal Kombat plot could undergo massive changes before anything becomes concrete.

As fans eagerly await the film's arrival, there's a plethora of questions we need answered. One important query has to do with the cinematic universe that #MortalKombat is set to take place in and the fact that it might have a connection to the DC Extended Universe.

Warner Bros. Owns The Rights To Mortal Kombat

Before going any further, a few things need to be made clear. The first thing is that the #MortalKombat property has been under the ownership of #WarnerBrothersPictures since 2009. That year, due to bankruptcy, the original proprietor of the Mortal Kombat franchise, Midway Games, was forced to sell the property to the highest bidder. That bidder was Warners. And the second point is that the reboot currently in development is being spearheaded by Warner Bros.

So why is this information relevant now? Because there's a very good chance that the reboot will take place within the existing DC Extended Universe. Since Warners gained proprietorship over Mortal Kombat, there have been several instances of crossovers between the characters in that franchise and the #DCEU, most of which have taken place in video games.

And considering that the prospect of intermingling Mortal Kombat with DC has been toyed with in the past, it's plausible that Warner Bros. will set up the Mortal Kombat reboot somewhere within the established DCEU.

Past Crossovers Between Mortal Kombat and DC

The latest joint venture between Mortal Kombat and DC took place in the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game. The two properties crossed over in a very minimal capacity, by including the Mortal Kombat character Scorpion within the gameplay.

Another instance of intermingling took place in the crossover fighting game Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, which made the prospect of the two properties existing alongside each other much more believable. The main campaign within the game depicts a plot thread from each respective property interlacing with the other, displaying characters jumping into the opposing universe. With that in mind, the Mortal Kombat reboot could reasonably exist within or alongside the DCEU, similar to how the two met in this game. Check out the trailer below.

Crossovers between the two franchises have made sense in the #videogame medium, which could mean a cinematic crossover is a move to make down the line. At first, both properties may not be able to interweave, seeing as the Mortal Kombat reboot has duty to establish a universe for itself before attempting to cross over with another separate universe. However, once the Mortal Kombat universe is established, there's no telling where the story could go, which is why a crossover with a DC title could believably happen.

Could Mortal Kombat Cross Over With The DCEU?

To sum it all up, since there have been several prior instances of DC and Mortal Kombat crossing over with one another in video games, along with Warner Bros. leading both the DCEU and the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot, it's safe to say the potential for a crossover between the two is very high.

In the scenario of Mortal Kombat existing within the DCEU, the reboot could believably exist in a parallel DC universe.

A similar explanation was given in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, when the two separate universes collided, resulting in a cataclysm between their worlds. If the Mortal Kombat reboot is destined to cross over with DC, then the existence of Mortal Kombat can be explained as the universe being on a parallel line, separate from the known DCEU.
