'Avengers: Endgame' May Be More Emotionally Devastating Than 'Infinity War'

Those of us who have been watching the #Marvel movies for the last decade know what's coming when #AvengersEndgame hits theatres this coming April.

As April 26, 2019 approaches, the emotional tension will no doubt become nearly unbearable, and tissue companies might want to be ready for the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, as Avengers: Infinity War was already devastating enough.

The Endgame trailer dropped December 7, and with it, so did a lot of jaws, as there was a whole lot going on in the two and a half minute trailer. #JeremyRenner was back, and from the look of it, his #Hawkeye persona is gone, replaced instead by #Ronin. #SteveRogers, aka #CaptainAmerica, was beardless, which was a bit of a refreshing change but possibly a bit of a misdirect if Endgame opens immediately following the events of Infinity War, given the multiple set images we've seen that suggest there's time travel happening in Avengers: Endgame.

Then, there was #TonyStark, aka #IronMan, floating through space in a ship he purloined or created. He's clearly exhausted and appears emotionally defeated as he's recording a message, presumably for #PepperPotts, his fiancée. If there's any character who's been predicted to be dead by the end of Avengers: Endgame, it's either Tony or Steve, and while the grief has been held in check for some time as the fans brace themselves for what undoubtedly will be a tough movie to watch, it's not going to be pretty when (or if) Tony dies.

#AntMan (#ScottLang) showing up was a bit of a surprise, too, especially for those who watched #AntManandTheWasp. How in the name of all that's holy did he get out of the quantum realm, and is the message he's trying to send to Steve in real time? No doubt, the answer to those questions - if they show up in the film release of Endgame at all—will be found on April 26, 2019, but theories about how Scott came to be there are already racing through the internet. Most of these theories suggest that he might be bouncing through time, especially since Janet van Dyne told him at the end of Ant-Man And The Wasp to avoid getting "sucked into a time vortex." Rumors that an older Cassie Lang has been cast for Avengers: Endgame add fuel to the idea that we're dealing with either time travel or alternate realities in this movie.

And where was Captain Marvel?

Certainly, anticipation was high that the newest addition to the #MCU would show up in the Endgame trailer, particularly since it was very strongly hinted at the end of Infinity War that Captain Marvel would somehow be involved in Endgame. In his final moments before he disappeared as a result of the Snap, #NickFury appeared to have messaged Captain Marvel, setting up her appearance in Endgame. Now, it could be that because the Captain Marvel trailer dropped so soon before the Avengers: Endgame one did, the decision makers at Marvel decided too much Captain Marvel might be too much of a good thing. However, the pundits are already suggesting that there were hints that Captain Marvel may just be the only one to save the day in Endgame, given what appear to be fairly dire straits for Tony and the knowledge that there would have been little to no chance that Scott would have escaped the Quantum Realm on his own.

With all of these questions and theories bouncing back and forth, as well as the knowledge that #ChrisEvans has more or less said that he's done playing Cap and #RobertDowneyJr suggesting it might be time for him to move on from Iron Man, it's small wonder that Marvel fans are already bracing themselves for what will no doubt be an impossibly emotional conclusion to an incredibly satisfying saga.

Here's the trailer if you've not been among the million-plus who already saw it:
