‘Making It’ Review

Do you like crafting? You should watch this show!!!

In its third week, Making It is making crafting more mainstream and it’s great! Here is what I’ve thought of it so far... the good and the bad!

If you haven't seen or heard of the show, it brings a bunch of different crafters together to challenge them in a craft of their choosing that follows their guidelines. The first challenge given is a small challenge lasting three hours, and then another bigger challenge (not sure how long that lasts). After the challenges, the winner gets a cute little patch! Which is so cute! Then someone whose project didn't quite make the cut goes home.

Amy and Nick aren't the judges, just the comic relief. They have two judges to make the decision of who goes home, and I will discuss them later!

First off, if you loved ParksandRecreation like me, you are going to love this just because of them. But here are the drawbacks... Amy Poehler acts dumb. She acts really stupid, which is not funny... I love Amy, but her acting deliberately stupid is not funny. I’m not digging it. She does have some funny moments which is nice, but overall not digging her facade so much. She doesn't know much about crafting, which is fine, but they make her look very unintelligible, which makes it seem like people who don't know how to craft are dumb. Which they aren't, they just aren't that kind of person.

If you loved Ron Swanson, you have to realize that Nick Offerman is not him, which is a bummer because I love Ron, but Nick is awesome as well. He is very knowledgeable and fun to watch. He really bonds with the contestants and understands what they are doing with each craft. He enjoys what they are doing and you can really see that he appreciates them and their work.

I do really like how they balance each other out, though. They are very light and try to create relationships with these characters. They try to make the show about them, but it has a lot of takes with them talking about them which, in my opinion, is not why I am watching the show. Put more screen time on the people and how they are making the craft; that's why we are watching it! We want to see how these people are making the craft so the person watching can recreate this craft at home if they want. Crafting for the most part is taking something from someone and making it your own.

The judges are THE WORST (Jean-Ralphio voice)! They are probably awesome people and great in their craft but they aren't great for this show.

The woman is Dayna Isom Johnson. She is Etsy's Trend Expert. Dayna is always looking at the negative of everyone's craft. They both look at the negative side of the crafts and stress out the crafters. Crafts take time and stressing out the contestants is not helpful. She also is looking at what's trending. The only reason why you need trendy crafts is to sell them. Most people craft for themselves, families, and others. I craft because I love it, not because something is trendy. She also does not like something if it's not colorful. There is a guy on the show who has more of a darker side and the judges don't like that. So what? They can't judge his craft for being his personality.

The man is Simon Doonan. He is the Creative Ambassador for Barney's New York. He is very judgmental of the works. He really only likes things that are colorful with stuff that have meaning to the individual. Dayna likes this too. Why does the craft have to be meaningful or have to do with your personal life? I do a bunch of crafts because I am good at them. I do string art, for example. There is no reason why I do it except that I like it. It has nothing to do with my family, nor do I make them for my family. I make them to make it and then give it away.

Their personalities aren't my favorite, either. They just aren't as invested and I feel they are just there to get a paycheck and don't care about the contestants and their crafts.

I understand that it's hard to judge something that other people perceive differently, but you can't judge others' artwork for not being trendy or with your standards.

These are the contestants. They are all wonderful people. They are a diverse group with diverse talents and are very creative and awesome people. So far three people have left. The woman in the first row on the far right, the man in the top row on the far left, and the the blonde woman in the striped shirt.

So far their crafts have been amazing. They all have unique takes on the challenges that Amy and Nick give them. They all have their style too. I have like three favorites so I'm conflicted about who should win! I also would love to know more about them and their backstories; make me love them and want to take them home!!

The contestants are great and the show so far is doing alright. If you haven't watched it yet, give it a try!
