'Mission: Impossible – Fallout' Is the Best Film in the Series With Thrilling Action and Twists

There cannot be peace without first a great suffering.

Everyone has their favorite Mission: Impossible movie. Some loved the first one, some loved Ghost Protocol, and others loved Rogue Nation.

Before watching the next film in the series, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, my favorite MI movie was the fourth one—Ghost Protocol.

And while I had high expectations for Fallout, I was doubtful that I would enjoy it more than Ghost Protocol, since the fourth MI is one of my favorite action movies ever. I also wasn't a fan of the direction Christopher McQuarrie took the franchise in Rogue Nation.

But I just got back from the theater, where I watched Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and HOLY CRAP, THIS MOVIE WAS BLOODY AMAZING.

Like I did with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, I will be judging this movie based on the WASDO criteria (Writing, Acting, Soundtrack, Directing, Originals).

And "Originals" means how it compares to the original MI films. There will be NO SPOILERS in this article until a certain point, and at that point, I'll warn you. So, here we go!

Writing

This film was written by Christopher McQuarrie. Like I said, I wasn't too thrilled about McQuarrie writing this movie because I'm not a huge fan of Rogue Nation.

But DAMN, McQuarrie delivered an amazing script. The opening scene of the film is as good as any other. It's not a major stunt scene like in Rogue Nation, but it has the perfect combination of action, story, exposition, and twists.

As the movie progresses, we find more about the film's exciting premise. My point is, this movie has some exciting, unpredictable twists and the ending is so thrilling and well-written that it rivals the excitement of Ghost Protocol.

So, as far as action movies go, few can top the sheer excitement and writing of this film. It's brilliantly paced, and just so damn good.

Writing Score: 19/20

Acting

With the help of McQuarrie's ability to write dialogue, all of the actors and actresses in the film delivered very convincing performances. The performances I want to commend the most would be those of Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Alec Baldwin, Rebecca Ferguson, and Sean Harris.

But like I said, everyone was superb in this movie. However, the way I work is, I only give a 20 for this criteria if there's a STAND-OUT performance.

Acting Score: 19/20

Soundtrack

The film's score was composed by Lorne Balfe, and the soundtrack was really good. It was combined perfectly with the film's action, and there were times where you could just hear the music blasting in the background, and it just sounds so good.

My only criticism was that I didn't think this movie utilized the famous MI theme enough. There were parts that were perfect for that theme, but it wasn't there.

Soundtrack Score: 18/20

Directing

McQuarrie gave us some pretty awesome action sequences in Rogue Nation, from the opera scene, to the plane scene. However, I thought he could've done better with some of the other scenes.

And in this film, McQuarrie's directing definitely improved. The way he directs action just looks phenomenal, and he does it in a way that brings you to the edge of your seat. His directing engages you and pulls you into the movie to the point where you don't want to look away.

Even during the dialogue scenes, McQuarrie used lens flares to his advantage and they did a great job of complementing the lighting.

Directing Score: 19/20

Originals

Well, I put it in the title, didn't I? Fallout is the best MI movie to date. The action is better than all its predecessors. The story is fantastic, but I think the story ends up falling behind the stories of Mission: Impossible 3 and Ghost Protocol. Story was MUCH better than Rogue Nation, though.

In my opinion, Fallout is better than Ghost Protocol by a hair, and it's MILES better than the first two. You rarely get a sequel that's this good, and Fallout accomplished that mission.

Originals Score: 20/20

FINAL SCORE: 95/100

So, yeah, I just really liked watching this movie. I only watched it once, and I need to watch it again. This movie is one of the greatest action films of all time, and I love it.

And if you haven't watched the movie yet, GET OUT BECAUSE I'M ABOUT TO SPOIL PARTS OF THE MOVIE. Spoilers will begin below the following picture. You have been warned!

I was not expecting Walker to actually be working with the Apostles. I didn't see that coming. I thought he would be kind of an antagonist, but the main VILLAIN? That shocked me.

And I was also really shocked to see him kill Hunley. Part of me was happy because it's the closest thing we have to watching Donald Trump die.

Kidding, obviously. But in all seriousness, it takes a lot of balls to introduce a character in a sequel and just straight-up have him get stabbed to death in the next installment. Props to McQuarrie for that.

That whole "defuse the bombs" sequence at the end of the film, along with the final action scenes, was super intense, and it remained just different enough from the ending of Ghost Protocol for me to not accuse the film of being a carbon-copy of the "Mission... accomplished!" scene.

Well, I gotta go. But I loved this movie.
