My Review of 'Aziz Ansari: Right Now'

Coming back from a really bad year of scandal, Aziz is back. Is his special worth the watch?

After about a year hiatus, Aziz is back. He's a little more different this time around than his earlier specials. I guess it's pretty obvious why. Last year he had a scandal concerning the way he treated a woman he had gone out with. It put him in the news for a little while.

I don't think it got as much attention as some because at the time, the Me Too movement was just getting moving and it was like every week we were hearing about another celebrity that had done something wrong. So after that week that Aziz had his moment of shame, a lot of people quickly forgot because there was another big celebrity that was outed as a rotten person.

Aziz semi-addresses this issue in his special. There's a more serious tone in some off the special, but he still keeps the laughs going.

He doesn't go into the relationship jokes like he used to, and again we all know why he's shied away from these issues. It's not a great time for him to tell jokes like that. It would have been interesting if he did put some jokes about how his relationship is post-scandal. It wouldn't be out of character for him to talk about such a subject because he tried to get a little personal with this special.

He's always been kind of personal in all of his specials though. He admits at times he had gone overboard in his previous specials and it's kind of funny how he makes fun of those past performances.

The jokes are on point though. He talks about the sensitivity of society nowadays, and I guess that's a recurring theme with a ton of comedians nowadays; especially since they all probably feel censored with the climate we live in nowadays.

I don't know he does it, but he again has some interesting insights into how we see race. I thought all of the race jokes would get tired, but somehow he keeps them fresh and engaging.

Again, this is a different Aziz from his previous specials. I felt that he was a lot more sombre in this special than in his past. It could be age but it could also be that he's filtered a lot of his material so that it can pass on a TV special.

You don't have the old hyperactive Aziz anymore. You have more of a mature Aziz. He's worked on his timing and his delivery is really nice. He's not going out for shock factor laughs anymore. He worked on a lot of his delivery. His storytelling is really on point in this outing. He really draws the audience in with some of his stories.

I have to say, this special feels more clever and witty than his previous specials. He's really matured as a comic and selected his material very interestingly. It makes me really curious if they're going to do another season of Master of None. With the scandal that he had last year, I don't know how it would turn out. The whole series is about his relationships, but then again the last season ended on a cliffhanger.

Overall, I really enjoyed Aziz's latest Netflix special. He had me bursting out in laughter on more than one occasion. It's one of those specials that you're probably going to try to take clips of and try to show your friends and family. I think going to be repayable as well. So I would have to give this Aziz Ansari: Right Now a 9 out of 10. I know it's a controversial special because of his past, but if you were a fan of his old material you'll really enjoy this one. You'll see his growth as a comedian and really appreciate what he pulled off here.
