My Review of the Movie 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

An Entertaining Movie That Will Be Enjoyed Even More by Fans of Queen's Songs

Bohemian Rhapsody is already a bonafide hit in the movie theatre. It’s a bio picture about the life and times of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the famous rock band Queen. Tons of people are checking out this movie and for this review I’ll give you my two cents while trying not to spoil the movie for those that still haven’t seen it already.

First off I do like Queen’s music. I think I like many others of my generation was introduced to Queen from the movie Wayne’s World back in the 90’s. Before then I think I was familiar with some of their songs but didn’t really know who they were. That scene in the car with everyone lip syncing the song Bohemian Rhapsody was a riot and I think it really stole the movie for a ton of people.

Fast forward more than 20 years later (oh my goodness, it’s more than 20 years!) the trailer for Bohemian Rhapsody comes out and it looks like a lot of fun. I’m familiar with all the music and it looks like a fun ride that I’d like to experience. So my anticipation was pretty high to watch this movie.

The first week out there were mixed reviews for the movie. A lot of the reviewers gave the movie mediocre scores because they claimed it was a cookie cutter movie that didn’t bring much for us to be excited for. Another review criticized the movie for not being accurate and villainized homosexuality. That week Bohemian Rhapsody killed it in the box office.

Due to unforeseen circumstances I wasn’t able to see it in the first week. However, my hopes were high despite the reviews. So it starts off with a crazy discovery that I didn’t even realize about Freddie Mercury. I had no idea he wasn’t born British, they claimed he was from Zanzibar and grew up in India. They give a little background on him and his family. It seemed to be a complicated relationship with them but you can tell that he cared about them very much. This introduction is intertwined with his developing relationship with the band. We get introduced to them and it seemed like they were his second family. I kind of wished they dived a little deeper into the history of the beginnings of the band and had more of the conversation with the family and the band. These scenes few by rather quickly when it seems like there could have been a lot of interesting tiny bits about him here that none of us would have known.

It’s totally apparent from the beginning that Freddie Mercury is a different person. I like how they explain that all of the members in the band had a say and influence on the songs that Queen created. It’s a dysfunctional family that functioned nicely as a unit. They could have talked more about the in fighting amongst the members. Instead they went into a different direction.

I have to agree that the movie was rosy and cookie cutter but in terms of entertainment value this was a fun ride. I really enjoyed the music and thought that they arranged the music very nicely throughout the movie. The acting was well done and I thought each of the characters looked like a spitting image of their real counterparts. It was eerie. It was funny that Mike Myers made an appearance. I think it was a nice nod to what he did with the song "Bohemian Rhapsody" for Wayne’s World. I thought it was funny that they mentioned how all the reviewers panned the song "Bohemian Rhapsody" and later it became a hit. It’s sort of the same with this movie.

Overall I really liked the movie and thought it’s worth checking out in the theatre. The theatre experience will give you the sound that you need to enjoy this movie. Not everyone lives in a place where you can crank up the volume and enjoy the songs in the movie. You’ll also get people singing along in the theatre. So it’s great seeing fans of the band enjoying the movie as well. I don’t think you have to be a fan to enjoy this movie so I’ll give this movie an 8 out of 10. This movie will continue to do great in the theatre and will probably do great when it comes out on video as well.
