Our 'Resident' Zombie Expert: Milla Jovovich Recaps The Horrors Of Resident Evil In Just Two Minutes

Well it is finally here, Resident Evil bows out of cinemas as Paul W. S. Anderson's franchise comes to an end with the sixth (and final) film. Over the past 15 years we have been gripped by the sinister antics of the Umbrella Corporation and #MillaJovovich's Alice, but the time has come to say goodbye to one of cinema's ultimate final girls.

With more hairstyles and outfit changes than the monsters she has battled, Project Alice has been on quite the journey since we first met her in 2002's #ResidentEvil, and in honor of #TheFinalChapter, Jovovich is on hand to recap the first five films in a handy two-minute video. It isn't quite John Cleese narrating The Walking Dead, but it is handy for those who have gone a bit rusty on the franchise:

I don't know about you, but the video gave me a serious case of the ferocious feels. Resident Evil was always OTT, but isn't that why we tuned in? So, from tentacle-mouthed dogs to a murderous murder of crows, what were the best moments from each of the first five Resident Evil movies?

Going Off The Grid 'Resident Evil'

Resident Evil is what started it all, and what better way to kick off the series? The infamous "laser grid" scene instantly made Colin Salmon's James "One" Shade one of the most memorable characters in the series, while seeing him diced into sushi-sized chunks was strangely satisfying. The laser grid returned time and time again to slice up various other cast members, but the original will always remain the best. Meanwhile a clone of Shade also returned for Resident Evil: Retribution, but sadly didn't meet the same fate.

License To Jill 'Apocalypse'

While most game-to-film franchises would have stuck with the lead character from their source, Anderson invented the wholly new character of Alice. Despite Jovovich ruling the roost, we always knew that Jill Valentine would make the move over from Capcom's games. Sienna Guillory arrived in style in the second film, quite literally with a bang, as she shot up a #zombie-filled police station. Although Jill returned for other entries, she was at her best in Apocalypse, and what an entrance!

There's Crow Place Like Home 'Extinction'

By the time Resident Evil had reached its third film, it was pretty much the Alice show. Extinction put Jovovich front and center in the most expansive film yet. From its dusty desert setting we met the hoards of Alice clones and underwent the Dr. Isaacs/Tyrant battle. However, the single scene that everyone talks about in Extinction is a powered-up Alice setting fire to a sky full of zombified crows. Pure Resident Evil madness at its best.

Open Wide 'Afterlife'

Afterlife may go down as the weakest Resident Evil film, but that isn't to say that it is without its positives. The whole LA prison story fell flat, as did Wentworth Miller's role as Chris Redfield, but when the final third took the action aboard the Arcadia ship, we were back to classic Umbrella Corporation evil. Alice's showdown with Shawn Roberts's Albert Wesker not only had those gory zombie dogs, we also saw Wesker succumb to his T-Virus injection. Before he had the holy hell blown out of his face, Wesker went full Resident Evil and sprouted tentacles from inside his mouth. What made it even better was the fact that it was near shot-for-shot with the Wesker battle from the games.

That Sinking Feeling 'Retribution'

So finally, my personal favorite from the series, and a return to form for the fifth film. Michelle Rodriguez returned in dual roles in Retribution, this time as good and bad versions of her character Rain Ocampo. A T-Virus-pumped "Bad Rain" had a final battle with Leon Kennedy and Luther West, where she continued to kick both their asses. Rain got a suitable demise thanks to Alice, plummeting into the icy waters and then being dragged to her death by a bobbing hoard of floating zombies. The iconic image as hundreds of hands drag Rain away is still haunting me now.

Say what you want about Resident Evil, but the figures don't lie; it may have been easy to top the likes of DOOM and Tomb Raider, but Resident Evil is the most successful game-to-film series out there, and probably will be for some time. While both Anderson and the title of the sixth film hint that it really will be the end, cinema has taught us that it might not be the case. Look where Saw: The Final Chapter, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, and Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday took us. While it is probably the end for Jovovich and Alice, the plague of undead and the reign of Umbrella corporation are far from over. For now, let's sit back and enjoy the end of the world!
