"The Flash" Episode 19 Recap: "Back to Normal"

Barry Allen went toe-to-toe with new Meta-human, Griffin Grey (Haig Sutherthand). Although Barry Allen wasn't up to the challenge after his recent loss of his speed. In the previous episode of The Flash, Barry Allen/The Flash gave up his Speed-Force to Zoom/Hunter Zolomon in order to save Wally West from being murdered by Zoom. The trade cost Barry Allen dearly, but he still stood strong in the face of another Meta-human. Throughout the episode, Barry Allen became very aware of his inability to save people without his speed, and his intention now is to regain his speed through the only way he knows how. By recreating the Particle Accelerator explosion.

Particle Accelerator explodes.

According to the Harrison Wells of Earth-2, the only way to restore Barry Allen's meta-human powers is to recreate the event that gave him his powers the first time, the Particle Accelerator Explosion. The explosion wasn't the only factor in transforming Barry Allen into the Flash, Barry was also hit by lightning during the same event. Despite the Particle Accelerator exploding unexpectedly the first time, it appears that Harrison Wells has figured out how to control the event, from the promos of the next episode of "The Flash", Rupture.

Preview of Episode 20 "Rupture"

Zoom (guest star Teddy Sears) arrives back on Earth-1 intent on taking over Central City. Barry (Grant Gustin) and Wells (Tom Cavanagh) come up with a plan to stop Zoom once and for all but it’s extremely dangerous. Unsure if he should take the risk, Barry reaches out to both fathers for advice. Henry (guest star John Wesley Shipp) is adamantly opposed to Barry risking his life again but Joe (Jesse L. Martin) thinks he can handle it which puts the two men at odds with each other. Meanwhile, Cisco (Carlos Valdes) is shocked when he vibes the Earth-2 villain Rupture, who happens to be his brother Dante’s (guest star Nicholas Gonzalez) doppelganger. Rupture came to this Earth seeking justice for Reverb’s death. Iris (Candice Patton) decides she’s finally ready to open up to Barry about her feelings for him

DC' Comics, Rupture(Dante Ramon).

There appears to be more villains arriving in Central City, along with Zoom's return. The Earth-2 counterpart to Dante Ramon(brother to Cisco Ramon) has arrived on Earth-1, and his name is "Rupture". Rupture appears to be almost identical to his comic-book counterpart, brandishing his rupture-scythe all the same. Apart from Rupture, we also get to see a glimpse of Zoom in the promo. Towards the end of Episode 19 "Back to Normal", we were privy to a conversation between Earth-1 Caitlyn Snow and Zoom. After their conversation, Zoom came to the realization that his next goal would be to conquer more worlds, wherein he more than implied that he's officially conquered Earth-2, also setting up Earth-2 to be plagued with villains running what's left of societies. But apart from Zoom's hints, his intention is to conquer Earth-1 now that he's done on Earth-2. Zoom has the Flash's power, added to his own so there isn't anyone who stands a chance against him. Which is why Barry Allen is going forward with Harrison Wells' plan to recreate the Particle-Accelerator explosion. Last season, it would have been a crazy idea to even make such a presumption, but with Earth-1 facing complete annihilation from Zoom, Barry Allen's only option is to recreate the event that turned him into The Flash. By doing so, he'll be able to save his city, and the promos for Episode 20, "Rupture" seem to indicate that Barry Allen will regain the Speed-Force by the end of the episode. With that being said, there's likely to be further repercussions of creating another Particle-Accelerator explosion.

Earth-2 Harrison Wells to recreate the Particle Accelerator explosion in Episode 20 "Rupture"

Barry Allen in the Particle Accelerator.

From the promos, the setup for the Particle-Accelerator seems to be in a controlled environment, but that probably won't be the case in this circumstance. For now, we can assume that Barry Allen will indeed regain his powers to stop Zoom, but the Particle Accelerator is likely to have the same effect on Central City this time as it did the first time. Meaning that individuals with the potential to become Meta-humans will undergo transformations into their meta-human counterparts. And one of those individuals could be Wally West.

Wally West, Kid Flash.

Wally West could become 'Kid Flash' in Season 2 of "The Flash"

In his DC' Comics history, Wally West has been known as the Kid Flash in most of his incarnations. On the current television series based on "The Flash" comics, Wally West has yet to become 'Kid Flash'. But it looks like that will change in Episode 20, "Rupture". With the Particle-Accelerator exploding and returning the Flash's powers, it's more than plausible that the rest of Central City will be affected, including Wally West. Adding his comic-book counterpart's history, there's a good chance that Wally West will become a Meta-human in Episode 20 of The Flash. Now, he may not be willing to be a hero just yet, or suit up as 'Kid Flash' but in all probability, Wally West is going to be affected by the controlled, Particle-Accelerator explosion, created by Harrison Wells of Earth-2. It's not clear if Harrison Wells of Earth-2 is more knowledgeable of the sciences than Eobard Thawne(whom masqueraded as Harrison Wells of Earth-1, to create the Particle Accelerator explosion the first time) did but we're going to find out. In all likelihood, regardless of Harrison Wells' prowess, there are going to be lasting repercussions of creating another Particle-Accelerator explosion. One of those repercussions will land on Harrison Wells' daughter, Jesse Quick.

Wally West

Speedster, Jesse Quick

That was another Easter-egg dropped by Tom Cavanaugh in Episode 19 "Back To Normal" of The Flash. In the ending scenes of the episode, Harrison Wells(Tom Cavanaugh) is having a discussion with his daughter, Jesse about protecting her and becoming the father she'd be proud of. But at the end of his talk with her, Harrison Wells says her full name, and the implications are far reaching. Wells calls his daughter by her full name, Jesse Quick.

DC' Comics origin of Jesse Quick

Jesse Quick, DC' Comics.

In DC' Comics, Jesse Quick is the alter-ego of Jesse Chambers, a female speedster. Having now confirmed that Harrison Wells' daughter is Jesse Quick, will her identity be that of Jesse Chambers upon becoming a speedster as well. There may be some confusion there but if the 'Jesse Quick' of the television series "The Flash" is a new incarnation of the speedster "Jesse Quick(whose real name is Jesse Chambers; irrelevant), than will she also be affected by the Particle Accelerator explosion, set to happen in Episode 20 "Rupture". There's also the ramifications of the title of the episode, apart from the meta-human deemed 'Rupture', the term may also hint at a rupture in the containment of the Particle Accelerator explosion, letting out the same dark-matter that turned the people of Central City into meta-humans the first time. With the fact remaining constant of Harrison Wells creating a contained Particle Accelerator explosion, the title of the episode "Rupture" may be associated due to a rupture in the containment, letting out the energies that will turn the current residents of Central City into meta-humans, including Jesse Quick. In that turn of events, Jesse Quick is likely to manifest meta-human abilities quickly but how she'll use them is up to debate. There could be a period of time that Jesse feels uncertain about herself, and cannot be a superhero/crime-fighter regardless of her abilities. Aside from the speculating on who Jesse Quick will become after she's subjected to the effects of the Particle Accelerator explosion, we still can put together who'll be affected by the 2nd Particle Accelerator Explosion.

Lasting effects of another Particle Accelerator explosion on Central City

For now, we can assume that Wally West and Jesse Quick are bound to be affected by the Particle Accelerator explosion, as well as Barry Allen being returned his powers, but who else may be affected. Within the story canon of the DC'TV universe, the fact has been asserted that people who become meta-humans have the inert compatibility in their genetics, implying that blood lineage is a factor in determining who is a possible candidate to become a Meta-human. In that line of reasoning, Harrison Wells could be set to become a meta-human as well. With his daughter's name lining up with an obvious connection to a well known meta-human in DC' Comics, it's plausible to assume that the same way Jesse Quick will be affected by the Particle Accelerator, Harrison Wells will too. But who could Harrison Wells become? Could Harrison Wells take on another counterpart of The Reverse Flash? Highly unlikely, but there's still potential for Harrison Wells of Earth-2 to become a meta-human on the television series "The Flash". Apart from new candidates to the Meta-human population in Central City, there's one more person who may be affected by the 2nd Particle Accelerator explosion, and he may already have innate meta-human abilities.

Cisco Ramon may be facing another level of his 'Vibe' transformation

Earth-2, Harry Wells.

In the last few episodes of "The Flash", we've witnessed Cisco Ramon developing his 'Vibe' meta-human powers. He was able to open the breach for Zoom to re-enter Earth-1 in Episode 18 "Versus Zoom", and now Cisco Ramon could be set to go through a full transformation into 'Vibe'. It's been clearly noted by his character of Cisco's fear of becoming something he doesn't want to be, but he may not have a decision in the matter when the next Particle Accelerator explodes. Cisco has already been affected by the first Particle Accelerator explosion in a small capacity, but another event could fully manifest his 'Vibe' powers to where Cisco Ramon has to learn how to control them or be destroyed by them. Cisco's powers manifest themselves from inter-dimensional forces, which could mean that his lack of control over them could send Cisco flying into another dimension of nothingness, unless he gains a level of control over his abilities, and becomes "Vibe" in the process. That's all speculative for the moment. Until the next episode of "The Flash" airs, we'll just have to keep guessing on who else may become a meta-human before the conclusion of Season 2 of The Flash.

What we know so far of Episode 20 "Rupture"

What we can confirm for now, is that Barry Allen and Harrison Wells of Earth-2 will be working on recreating the Particle Accelerator explosion in a controlled environment, during Episode 20 "Rupture". And the reconstruction of the event will endow Barry Allen with the Speed-Force once again, but will it be enough to stop Zoom? We can also confirm that Zoom/Hunter Zolomon is back on Earth-1, but this time to conquer all. He got what he wanted from Barry Allen/The Flash in Episode 18 "Versus Zoom" , and now he wants more. Unless Barry Allen regains his speed to stop Zoom, everything Barry Allen loves is going to be taken from him. Along with Barry Allen regaining his speed, Wally West and Jesse Quick are likely to be affected by the Particle Accelerator explosion as well, turning the two into Kid Flash and speedster 'Jesse Quick', respectively. Which means we'll have three speedsters on "The Flash" before the conclusion of the season. Or could necessity to stop Zoom rob these new potential speedsters of their powers?

How will Barry Allen beat Zoom?

Wally West, DC' Comics.

Against Zoom, Barry Allen was barely able to scratch the surface, even after developing his abilities for some time, as well as wearing the Tachyon amplifier. But simply gaining his original powers through recreating the Particle Accelerator explosion won't be enough to stop Zoom/Hunter Zolomon now that he has double the speed. Barry Allen and Team Flash are still in possession of the Tachyon device that gave Barry an advantage over Zoom in Episode 18 "Versus Zoom", but it still won't be enough to stop Zoom. Another option to make Barry faster would be to give him the Velocity serum, but Barry won't take it. Then the only other option will be to take the speed of another speedster and give it to Barry Allen.

Is Wally West going to help Barry Allen/The Flash defeat Zoom?

Wally West strongly affirmed his intent to repay The Flash someday, so if Wally is granted the meta-human powers to become "Kid-Flash", he may give up those abilities to give The Flash a shot at beating Zoom/Hunter Zolomon. Along with Wally West potentially giving Barry Allen an upgrade, it's plausible that Jesse Quick would also give up her speed capabilities to Barry Allen/The Flash in order to stop Zoom. In that set of circumstances, Barry Allen would be able to match up with Zoom and fully commit to ending Zoom's reign of terror. Which brings up another intriguing dilemma for Barry Allen/The Flash.

Speedster Team, DC' Comics.

Is Barry Allen capable of killing?

Barry Allen/The Flash hasn't had to kill anyone in order to stop them, some of his meta-human adversaries have succumbed to their meta-human natures(i.e. Griffin Grey) and died but he's never killed anyone directly. But in the situation that Barry Allen is facing now, he could be forced to kill Zoom to stop him. Barry knows that Hunter Zolomon/ Zoom won't stop until he gets what he wants, which puts Barry in difficult position. The Flash may have to kill Zoom in order to save lives, Zoom has made his willingness to kill clear, and Barry Allen may have no other choice than to kill him if 'Zoom' can't stop himself when The Flash catches up to him.
