The Most Anticipated Upcoming Movies of Next Year

The following is the top ten movies coming out in 2019 that I’m most looking forward to. I’ll also explain why they are the movies I’m looking forward to watching. This is not a list of movies I think will make the most money or will even be the best, just the ten I especially want to watch next year.

10: 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle 2'

The sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is being released December 13, 2019. So far all we really know about this movie is the release date, that the four main cast members are back, and so is the director Jake Kasdan.

My expectations for the first Welcome to the Jungle were low and I ended up really liking the movie. How much I enjoyed the first is the only reason it made the list, but I felt like I couldn’t put it any higher without knowing more or seeing a poster or trailer.

9: 'Rocketman'

Rocketman comes out May 17. Rocketman tells the story of Elton John’s life, from being a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music through his influential and enduring musical partnership with Bernie Taupin.

Rocketman is directed by Dexter Fletcher, who also directed Eddie the Eagle. It stars Taron Egerton as Elton John. The rest of the cast is made up of Richard Madden (Game of Thrones, Cinderella), Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World, The Help), and Jamie Bell (Fantastic Four, Jumper).

Here is a trailer for Rocketman:

8: 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is the story of a faded TV actor and his stunt double, who embark on an odyssey to make a name for themselves in the film industry during the Helter Skelter reign of terror in 1969 Los Angeles. The movie is written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. I have enjoyed most of his films so far. After seeing who made up the cast for this one, I found myself almost certain that I’d enjoy this one too.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Kurt Russell, Al Pacino, James Marsden, Emile Hirsch, and Dakota Fanning. While I sometimes find big ensemble cast films to be all over the place because they try too hard to give each actor the screen time they deserve, I have confidence this one will be good because I’ve never seen a Leonardo DiCaprio movie that I didn’t like.

At this time, there is no trailer for this film. The film is set to be released August 9, 2019.

7: 'Captain Marvel'

The next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Captain Marvel and it comes out March 8. Captain Marvel is about Carol Danvers becoming one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

The movie takes place during the 1990s before the events of the MCU. This could end up being the perfect setup to Avengers 4 and explain why, if Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful heroes, she didn’t help stop Thanos during Avengers Infinity War.

Captain Marvel stars Brie Lawson (Room, Kong Skull Island), Jude Law (The Young Pope, Spy), and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers, Pulp Fiction).

Captain Marvel comes to theaters March 8, 2019. Here is the trailer.

6: 'Glass'

Glass is a sequel for two of M. Night Shyamalan’s movies coming together, Unbreakable and Split. Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds David Dunn (Bruce Willis) using his supernatural abilities to track down Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy), a disturbed man with 24 personalities.

Glass is written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan and also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Sarah Paulson, and Anya Taylor-Joy. I love Shyamalan’s previous movies, with the exception of The Last Airbender, and think he is back on the roll he started on with Unbreakable, Signs, and The Sixth Sense.

Glass comes out January 18, 2019. You can watch the trailer here.

5: 'Spider-Man Far From Home'

Spider-Man Far From Home is the sequel to Spider-Man Homecoming. The story sees Peter Parker and his friends going to Europe for summer vacation after the events of Avengers 4. There, Peter finds himself trying to save his friends from a villain named Mysterio.

Spider-Man Far From Home sees the return of director Jon Watts and stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, and Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio. The inclusion of Mysterio is what has me the most excited about this movie. He’s a Spider-Man villain we haven’t seen in the movies yet and was supposed to be included in Sam Raimi’s fourth Spider-Man movie that was cancelled for the Amazing Spider-Man series.

Spider-Man Far From Home is to be released on July 5 and does not have a trailer at his point.

4: 'It Chapter Two'

It: Chapter Two takes place 27 years after the events of the first one. The Losers Club has grown up and moved away until a devastating phone call will bring them all back.

Chapter Two sees director Andy Muschietti back to hopefully do a great job at showing up the story Stephen King put on paper. It Chapter Two stars Bill Skarsgård, Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, and Sophia Lillis.

It Chapter Two comes out on September 6, 2019 and has yet to release a trailer.

3: 'Godzilla King of the Monsters'

Godzilla King of the Monsters is the sequel to the 2014 movie Godzilla. The story follows the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as they face off against god-sized monsters Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and Godzilla’s ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah as humanity’s existence hangs in the balance.

Directed by Michael Dougherty who recently directed Krampus. the only cast member returning is Ken Watanabe. Godzilla King of the Monsters stars Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, and Kyle Chandler.

While I didn’t love Godzilla because of how little scene time the monster actually received, the trailer for this one gives the impression that the several monsters in this one will be more front and center.

Godzilla King of the Monsters comes out on May 31, 2019 and you can watch the trailer here.

2: 'Shazam'

The next movie in the DC comics universe after Aquaman comes out this December will be Shazam. Shazam is the story of a 14-year-old boy in foster care named Billy Batson who can turn into the superhero Shazam just by saying the name.

Shazam is directed by David F. Sandberg, the director of Lights Out and Annabelle Creation, and stars Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Adam Brody, and Djimon Hounsou.

This movie looks fun and different from the DC movies we have received before. And while I loved Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman, and Justice League, Suicide Squad I felt was garbage and didn’t live up to the trailer. I’m hoping Shazam will.

Shazam comes out on April 5, 2019 and you can watch the trailer here.

1: 'Avengers 4' Untitled

May 3, 2019 Marvel releases the sequel to Avengers Infinity War. Not much is known about this movie, not even the title. There’s plenty of speculation about what’s going to happen—some say time travel but there has been no plot reveals yet.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced a trailer for Avengers 4 would be released before the end of this year and with that the title would be revealed. The directors have said they are holding the title back because it could be a spoiler for the movie. Some say the title is either End Game, Godkiller, or Assembled.

The reason this is the movie I’m looking forward to most next year is because of how much I loved the snap at the end of Infinity War. I was happy that Marvel finally made a movie where the heroes didn’t always win. Now I want to see what they do next.

There are a few movies that didn’t make the list and I have my reasons for that. Star Wars 9 isn’t here because The Last Jedi made me angry and ruined everything J.J. Abrams set up in the Force Awakens. Dark Phoenix isn’t here because it looks almost as if they want to retell the same story as X-Men The Last Stand and I’m not a fan of that movie. Hellboy didn’t make the list because that would be number 11. Then there are movies that I think will be bad, like the Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix. Plus Disney is doing live action movies for Aladdin and Lion King but I didn’t like The Jungle Book and didn’t waste time watching Beauty and the Beast when I only heard bad things about it. Cinderella was the exception. So I’m not looking forward to these two. They will try to redo things from the cartoons I love and I will end up hating it.

Thank you for reading and let me know what movies you’re looking forward to in 2019.
