What It's Like to Audition For 'America's Got Talent'!

Do you have what it takes?

Do you have a hidden talent? Have you ever wanted to make something with yourself? Chances are, you've heard of the NBC reality show, America's Got Talent. And although I'm usually doing schoolwork, writing on this site, or...other things, I love doing magic.

So, here's a guide on what it's like to audition for AGT. I've auditioned twice and I want to give you some tips on how to ace your audition.

1) Get your performance together.

One thing to remember is you only have 90 seconds to audition, no more. So, whether you're a singer, a dancer, a magician, or whatever, you need to condense your entire act to 90 seconds or less.

You gotta be confident. You gotta be cool. You gotta look good. Stand out from everyone else. Don't just be average – be you. Be different.

2) Find out where auditions are.

There are only so many cities that AGT can go to, but if you live in New York, Los Angeles, or Las Vegas, you're pretty much guaranteed to have them visit your city for auditions.

Last year, when I auditioned, it was at Queens College here in NYC, and this year, it was at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, which is also where Comic-Con is held. So, go to AGTAuditions.com to find out more about when and where they'll visit your city.

And if they're not visiting, then you can also submit a video.

3) Get the paperwork filled out.

Yes, when you're signing up to be on a national TV show, you're gonna have to sign a personal release to have your face shown on TV. Click here to see the paperwork for this year.

And also, you're not gonna be in front of the celebrity judges. This is a producer audition and they use this to determine if you get to go up in front of Howie, Mel B, Heidi, and Simon. But the holding room shots are from the producer auditions.

4) Read the FAQs.

After you register on AGTAuditions.com, you're gonna have some questions. So, the place to go is the FAQ page. This is where you find out about bringing family members and what's allowed and not allowed in your act.

Get your hair ready, get your stage presence ready, because it's time for the big day...

5) Audition!

From experience, this is what I know: you walk in, you get a wristband, and you get your famous audition sticker. Then, you go to the tables where you hand in your paperwork to a staffer, and you walk into the holding room.

You get moved to a few new holding rooms, then you get moved in with a group of other acts, and you get called up to do your act. Have good showmanship, and most importantly – have fun!

And that's how you ace your audition!

Depending on the time you show up, lines can be long, so you should have a snack and be sure to have your phone charged up. The first time I auditioned, it was a four-hour wait.

And from personal experience, I think the wait is shorter if you show up earlier in the day. :)

Here's some more advice for you on your audition day:

  • Be yourself
  • Be confident
  • Take a few deep breaths
  • Show your true talent
  • Don't act nervous
  • Keep smiling (unless that's not you)

Now, I got rejected from season 12 of AGT, and there's a good chance I'll be rejected from season 13. But I'll continue doing what I love. And whether you get on or not, you should too. So, don't hesitate. Just do what you love.
