Why Are Books Fading Out?

We live in a society where books are used as doorstops.

It’s hard to find people in 2018 who are still enthusiastic about books, and I want to know why. Due to technology today, it’s easier to read books. All you need is a phone with built-in book apps and you can buy books, or find a lot of free ones, so shouldn’t there be more book lovers? There are so many genres to choose from and there are a huge range of options, but that’s not enough for most people. However, a lot of people find reading books to be a challenge; it is easier to watch the movie instead of reading the book, but by reading you get so much more details. I have looked in to some practical reasons as to why people don’t read, and that’s what I’m going to explain.

Not Enough Time

According to a group of youths, reading takes up a lot of time that they don’t have to spare. The pressures on the younger generation in today’s society means most of their time is spent studying. However, a solution to this would be to sit down for at least half an hour and just read a few pages at a time. No one is expecting you to complete a book in a day, it could take you a month. You can read short stories or even poems, it’s still reading.

It Costs Too Much

Some books can be very pricey, and not a lot of people have the luxury of being able to afford them. I understand this, however there are also ways to get around it. If you prefer reading books in person, you could go to your local library and take out a book for a couple of weeks. If you prefer reading on your phone, there are a bunch of free books you can download from the book store. There are also sites where you can sign up and get your first book free, and so on.

Multimedia

As I briefly mentioned earlier, a lot of people prefer to watch the adaption of the book instead of actually reading it. A lot of people prefer visuals instead of just words, and it takes up a lot less time. However, you don’t get the full amazing experience when you just watch the show/movie. Reading gives you backstory, details you didn’t know you needed, and a direct insight into the character's mind. It gives you more of the show/movie you love, so why wouldn’t you read it?

Overall, a lot of people just don’t find books interesting, but that’s because they haven’t given them a chance. They can’t expect to love the first book they ever read, they have to read a bunch of different ones and find the genre they love. Reading is really beneficial, they learn whilst jumping into someone else’s life. It can be used as a way to escape their own life for a little while, and they can find new characters to relate too.

To summarise, reading should no longer be pushed aside. Pick up a book today, and it could just change your life.
