Captain America: Civil War was one of the most important movies in the MCU timeline. Not just because it divided the Avengers who were ever so assembled, but also because of the introduction of the Sokovia Accords. With the Earth's mightiest heroes teaming up yet again for Avengers: Infinity War, how does the Accords control the fate of MCU and the Avengers? Let's find out.

The Sokovia Accords was established by UN and ratified by 117 countries in order to keep a check on the proceedings of the Avengers and create a system of accountability. The accords were presented to the Avengers after a recent event involving the Avengers in Lagos, Nigeria leading to civilian casualties. Thaddeus Ross, the new Secretary of State presented it before them.

"The Sokovia Accords. Approved by 117 countries, it states that the Avengers shall no longer be a private organization. Instead, they'll operate under the supervision of a United Nations panel, only when and if that panel deems it necessary."

However, it wasn't taken well by them, at least some of them. And it was the one of the main reasons leading to segregation of the Avengers into Team Cap and Team Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War. And the differences of opinions still continue to exist between them and is believed to affect the team as Phase 3 films of the MCU have started crawling out. They can't afford to have a cold war between them while fighting a being possessing the Infinity Gauntlet.

The Accords recognize the Avengers as a group of henchmen working for the Governments and nothing else. The team cannot work freely under it's supervision. Steve realized it and declined to sign it along with some other Avengers. The Accords already introduced restrictions on the team. Those who signed it have to refrain from crossing international borders and construction of any form of AI. Those who didn't sign it are seen as enemies to the UN.

"For the past four years, you've operated with unlimited power and no supervision. That's an arrangement the governments of the world can no longer tolerate."

With Avengers: Infinity War months away from hitting the theaters, the Avengers need to bridge down the differences in their opinions. Only then do they stand a chance against the mighty Thanos. The Accords seem like a pebble in a river in the midst of an intergalactic war. With the Guardians and Doctor Strange soon coming into the scene, the Accords would prove to be a pain in the butt for the Avengers.

Until and unless the Accords are removed from the table by the UN itself, the Avengers would find themselves in the middle of a predicament when Thanos would be wreaking havoc and the UN would be trying to devise a futile strategy. The Avengers are a solid team, but they can't take their own decisions if some people keep interfering in their decisions and ways of tackling a situation. And that could well be the end of Earth.
