5 Best Vintage Shows We Need To See Today

We all love sitting down to watch the old TV shows from back in the days when sex, drugs and teenage angst weren't the only things that TV writers wrote about. Here I do a roundup of all the old TV shows I personally think are necessary and engaging in today's materialistic and fast-paced world. These are representative of a simpler time, where things were more clear and more fun, where the ambiguity between good and evil, the grey areas in between were less. There may not have been a lot of action but there definitely was a lot of drama. Some shows in these really defined the TV industry. These were the pioneers, the men and women that trail blazed through an unforgiving and unknown terrain. Come with me now to the time of cheesiness and campy TV galore. Who knows? You might actually like it better...

1) Star Trek The Original Series

Originally described as Wagon Train to the Stars, this show was the basis of a franchise that has 12 live action films, one animated series, and six TV shows. Star Trek chronicles the voyages of the starship Enterprise of the United Federation of Planets. Starring remarkable actors such as William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and Deforest Kelly, this original series of Star Trek will take you by storm with the profoundness of its acting, questions on moral dilemmas that would not be important for several decades, and of course the camaraderie between Kirk and Spock. Also, one would be surprised to see many devices that we take for granted now such as the C.T scan being on the show as futuristic technologies (considering it was the sixties, that is not surprising). The only downside is that now the sets look a little outdated and the graphics poor in comparison to modern shows but if that's what you like I'd recommend the remastered version of this series – Definitely a must watch.

2) I Dream Of Jeannie

One of my personal favorites. It had the beautiful Barbara Eden in it. I Dream Of Jeannie was about the mixing of the old world with the new. A comedic take on the old Aladdin storyline, what would happen if a space age astronaut came upon a dazzlingly enticing genie in the bottle, who also happens to have a huge crush on him. The sexual tension is comedic and fun, as are the daily tribulations Jeannie puts Major Nelson in as she adjusts to life in California. Guest stars are abundant and this sixties show is really one for the books. I highly recommend it for the light-hearted humor, the really nice sets and the cuteness of the genie. I Dream of Jeannie may have been a rival show for Bewitched but it clearly surpasses it by leaps and bounds. There are also a few movies on it but since none of them featured the original Major Nelson actor I haven't watched any of them.

3) The Munsters

In the realm of horror, one can hardly go on without mentioning the original Munsters. This was about a dysfunctional family made up of iconic creatures of the night such as: Frankenstein (the father Herman Munster), Count Dracula (the grandfather Sam), the Witch (Lily Munster), and the Werewolf (Eddie Munster). The humor lies in the fact that they are all blissfully unaware of how they wreak fear in the community and are shown to be model citizens helping out the neighborhood and school as often as they can. Though their activities may be less than enjoyable for us, underlying it all is a sense of family and belonging that makes us become emotionally attached to this family. A show for the books as it were.

4) Stargate SG-1

Not exactly as old as the others mentioned here but still is about 14 years old as of now. Stargate took the age-old stories of the rocks at Stonehenge being portals to other worlds and aliens helping to build the pyramids and presented it anew. The stargate is explored by a team of interested scientists and military personnel and is used to travel other worlds searching for... well maybe I shouldn't tell it to you. It brings a lot of old Egyptian and Greek mythology to the fore, talking about lost civilizations, alien worlds and new ideas in the backdrop of military training and hard choices. I would seriously recommend watching the movie as a prelude to the show though, it has James Spader in the lead role and really something to see.

5) Carl Sagan's Cosmos

This show was the basis of many of our modern day scientists and astronomers choosing their professions in space. Starring the amazing astronomer and space personality of Carl Sagan, we were taken to the realm of the Cosmos, where anything and everything was possible in our spaceship of the imagination. From stars to planets, cells and nebulae, Sagan had a way of making us feel not only small and insignificant but also important and universe changing. We battled with the debates about our own consciousness, where we are going in the universe, what must be the beginning and end of time. Though some things have changed as our understanding of science and technology has improved, for a new person to space, this is definitely a series that will blow your mind away. Neil Degrasse Tyson also has a new series about the very same topics and names, but I prefer the original.
